The publishers of this volume tell us its purpose is to 'look at the history of the EU, the "core" countries within it and the issue of further expansion into Asia'. The author, on the other hand, feels that the notion of Europe is 'an impossible object' in which the EU figures at best sporadically, if at all, so that at present attempts at writing its history can only be 'makeshift' (p. xi).
