This volume seeks to respond to the regrettable gap in comparative studies of employment relations by examining industrial relations changes in France, the UK and Germany over the previous decade. It explores differences in employment, pay and working conditions, how these are fixed and regulated, power relations between capital and labour, and the role of the state in relation to this within the three countries. It questions the benefits of using the varieties of capitalism (VoC) approach to investigating the role that the state has played in developing employment relations. The author, Susan Milner, argues that in order to understand employment relations, analysis of both institutions and processes is essential.
