Silicone elastomers are now well accepted for their unique range of properties that stem from their molecular characteristics. In particular their high and low temperature stability gives than a wider operating range than any other elastomer. Figure 9 shows general limits of applicability of vari- ous elastomers and it can be seen that only fluoro polymers can exceed sih- cones to reach even higher temperature limits. Care must be taken in formulating the silicone elastomer because the properties can be further modified by the compounds with which they are formulated and by con- taminants remaining in the elastomer after manufacture that may improve or reduce the temperature stability.
