IN OUR CONTEXT, coating and laminating (C/L) fabrics are textile fin- ishing processes designed to add or improve function and to add value to a material. The first coated fabrics likely occurred when an early ancestor spread whale oil or blubber, bear grease, or some similar material onto a fabric to make it waterproof. The industry that has emerged from this event is large, diverse, and highly fragmented.
