Timothy Hildebrandt's book about social organizations in China outlines the political opportunities to which these organizations must adapt in order to work effectively in an authoritarian setting. The book is divided into the political, economic, and personal (guanxi) opportunities faced by these groups. The author bases his research on cases of success, arguing that most other research on social organizations focus on the cases of failure where the organization is repressed by the government. He chooses these cases in order to examine the strategies used by social organizations to navigate the state, and increasingly, to create new political opportunities.
