It is impossible to be anything other than profoundly impressed by the effort, energy and enthusiasm of octogenarian Era Vogel's attempt to explain the contemporary significance of the septuagenarian whose political leadership contributed enormously to the transformation of China. Deng Xiaoping had tenacity, self-confidence, energy and above all faith in his life's work, and his infectious enthusiasm no doubt inspired Vogel to adopt a similarly enthusiastic approach to his latest book.
