Discussions about political meritocracy have been revived over the past decade or so, inspired, in part, by the rise of China and, in part, because of governance problems in liberal democratic nations. The result of this revival has led some political theorists such as Daniel Bell and Li Chenyang to focus on the question of how - and if -political meritocracy and liberal democracy can either thrive together in a meaningful hybridized state or coexist as competing models of political development.
