Nanotechnology Solutions in the Petroleum Industry

Fulfilling worldwide energy demand in the 21st century with more cost-effective and environment-friendly techniques is the most challenging problem. Discoveries in nanotechnology open up the possibility of moving beyond the current alternatives for energy supply by introducing new technologies in the petroleum industry that are more efficient, and environmentally sound. It is easily conceivable that such a technology is the cornerstone of any futuristic energy technology that has the greatest need for innovative solutions. This paper addresses the potential applications of nanotechnology in the petroleum industry at both upstream and downstream sections and presents some of the main developments that have taken place in this area over the last years that can aid the development of cheaper, more efficient, and environmentally sound energy supplies.
