By the early 1950s, Trans-Canada Air Lines was losing the competitive race on the prestigious blue-riband trans-Atlantic service to other carriers with more modern equipment. TCA was hard-pressed to keep up with its North Stars which, although pressurized, were slower (and noisier) than the Douglas DC-6s and Lockheed 749 Constellations used by KLM, Sabena, Air France or the magnificent Boeing Stratocruiser that BOAC flew into Montreal.
