摘要

Given today's rapid diffusion of electronic gadgetry, it seems odd to remember that there was a time when the spread of mass communication technologies came at a much slower pace. It took nearly five decades for frequency modulation (FM) radio to evolve into the popular medium we know today. In fact, FM's development was intermittent at best, as certain social, economic and industry factors greatly slowed-and even interrupted-the medium's growth despite its technical superiority and market-changing potential. Sounds of Change: A History of FM Broadcasting in America, the latest contribution from historian Christopher Sterling and radio scholar Michael Keith, tells the story of the upstart FM, a technical marvel that never seemed to fully fit in with the times in which it evolved.
