Although the effectiveness of several antidepressants in relieving painful diabetic neuropathy has been demonstrated, there is still no definitive conclusion as to the specific method of action. It is likely that a combination of serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibition increases potency. Perhaps the quinidine-like effect and the effect on opioid receptors play a role as well.
