ISRAEL'S OFEQ AND EROS SATELLITE PROGRAMMES

Israel's domestic Ofeq satellite programme has been directed solely towards the development of a national photoreconnaissance capability, although the first two satellites launched in 1988 and 1990 were technology demonstrators withouta photoreconnaissance payload. Ofeq 3 launched in 1995 marked a quantum leap in the country's satellite capability, with the satellite carrying a photoreconnaissance camera and having a manoeuvre capability. The same satellite platform was proposed as the basis for South Africa's unflown GREENSAT and is the basis of the EROS family of commercial imaging satellites.
