A recent publication by The Indian Genome Variation Consortium (IGVC) provides the most thorough investigation to date of the genetic diversity of the Indian people (IGVC; Journal of Genetics, April 2008). The authors' broad conclusion is the genetic diversity of India correlates mainly with ethnicity and language. The conclusion is followed by a discussion of what the findings might imply for the world-wide quest to uncover links between genetics and epidemiology.rnGenetic diversity is an important factor for association studies that aim to discover genetic factors implicated in human health and disease. In any population being studied, if there is an underlying genetic structure that is ignored (because its existence is unknown), spurious associations can result. Therefore a clear understanding of the genetic structure of human populations is of fundamental interest to medical science.
