Genelec's Bartone and Stewart discuss loudspeaker placement

At the February 2 meeting of the New England School of Communications Student Section, members heard a presentation by Genelec's Bruce Bartone, national sales manager, and Paul Stewart, product specialist. They started out by doing some demonstrations of how loudspeaker placement and room acoustics immensely affect the way we monitor audio. They gave a history of Genelec and detailed the extent of their product line of active monitoring speakers.rnThey discussed a number of interesting points, such as the difference between surround monitoring for film and for music. Apparently for film the rear loudspeakers are used more for a sense of ambience, and the center front loudspeaker is used for the voice over. In music there really isn't an established standard, so you may have instruments or vocals in the rear loudspeakers that you want to sound just as loud and close as your front loudspeakers. Because of this, for monitoring for film, you may want to have your rear loudspeakers farther back, and for music, closer.
