TRANSITIONS FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE IN URBAN-DESIGN MOVEMENTS: APPLICATION OF THE MODEL-PROTOTYPE-ADAPTATION FRAMEWORK TO NEW URBANIST NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES

摘要

The transition of urban-design models in practice has often resulted in the deviation of such models from the original intent of their proponents. This paper (1) proposes a new theoretical framework, the Model-Prototype-Adaptation (MPA) framework, that researchers can use to observe the transition of urban-design models in a systematic way and (2) conducts a comparative case study of New Urbanist practice in the Atlanta, Georgia, metropolitan area to test and demonstrate the potential of the MPA framework as a research tool for urban-design study. The case study shows how the transition of the New Urbanist model has occurred in practice and demonstrates how researchers can use the MPA framework to identify potential weaknesses in the implementation of an urban-design model, thereby promoting a more successful model over time.
