Planning the Good Community: New Urbanism in Theory and Practice

While new urbanism has been practiced for decades, most works on it focus on either practice or theory. Grant's Planning the Good Community is one of the few books that bridges practice and theory, enriching the currently scant dialogue between practitioners and theorists. She presents a general overview, along with observations about new urbanism in North America, Europe, and Asia, while integrating theoretical aspects into the discussion. The nine chapters of the book are grouped into three parts. Part one focuses on the rise of new urban approaches that led to the new urbanism movement, providing the historical background in chapters 1 and 2 and the theoretical background in chapter 3. Part two concentrates on new urbanism in practice, discussing general observations and case studies in the United States, Europe, Asia, and Canada in four separate chapters. Part three discusses the prospects of new urbanism by linking practice and theory and providing a conclusion. Throughout the book, short Canadian and international case studies are introduced by the author's former students and research assistants.
