EUROCONTROL and FAA Joint Safety Activities

Currently, safety performance is measured in aviation by the use of reported safety occurrences that compromise certain specified safety criteria in a number of operational areas. A major drawback with such measures is that they can distort the subsequent mitigation efforts by the focus on simply the adverse performance of a particular local safety measure, rather than consideration of an integrated system-wide approach. In addition, questions remain about the reliability and robustness of the reporting schemes upon which the current safety performance measures are based.
