1,126,974. Reactors. EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY (EURATOM). 2 Feb., 1966 [15 Feb., 1965], No. 4551/66. Heading G6C. A pulsed nuclear reactor, especially but not essentially a fast reactor, has its reactivity pulsed by a disc rotated before a neutron exit window of the reactor, which disc carries localized means, e.g. a piece of nuclear fuel or a reflector, for increasing the reactivity as it passes in front of the window, ascrew connection being provided between the disc and its driveshaft with a frangible driving connection arranged, in the event of a sudden stoppage of the driveshaft, to fracture under the momentum of the disc and to permit the disc to continue rotation by running along the screwthread of the drive-shaft. The hand of the screwthread is such that as the disc runs along the driveshaft it moves away from the window. The sudden stoppage of the driveshaft may be the result of seizure or breakage of a bearing. In order to brake the disc, the screwthread may be coarse and/or the disc may work against deformable material as it moves out of position.
