The interdiffusion of thermotropic liquid crystalline polyester and a thermoplastic polyester was investigated by microstructural examination and interfacial tensile testing. The interface between the two polymers was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The interfacial tensile strength was measured as a function of processing temperature and diffusion time. At the highest temperature used in the study, the interfacial strength was measured to be ~ 4 MPa. This value is considerably smaller than the strength of either of the pure polymers and explains the relatively weak interface encountered in such polymer blends.
