Ensuring Implementation Fidelity Is Essential for Quality Improvement

Despite substantial investment, the evidence suggests that there is still a long way to go toward consistent and equitable delivery of high-quality care. 1 In an effort to improve performance, hospitals and health systems have adopted quality improvement (QI) methods originally developed in other industries, such as Lean, Six Sigma, Lean plus Six Sigma, Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA), and Robust Process Improvement®. Although a majority of hospitals report using one or more of these methods or their variants, there is relatively little evidence on whether and how they improve health care quality.
