Establishing the Necessary Conditions for Achieving Language Access and Equitable, Quality Care for Populations with Limited English Proficiency

As the literature on health disparities and language barriers has matured, studies have moved from describing disparities to evaluating improvement efforts. In this issue of the Journal, Taira et al. systematically reviewed the literature on interventions related to language access and professional interpreter use and their impact on access, communication, quality of care, and health outcomes. Also in this issue, Paradise et al. report on improvement efforts to reduce the use of ad hoc (family or friends) interpreters throughout their health system, Cambridge Health Alliance.
