AHRQ Quality and Safety Initiatives

The mission of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is "to improve the quality, safety, efficiency and effectiveness of health care for all Americans." AHRQ, an agency in the Department of Health and Human Services, was created in 1989 as the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research and was reauthorized in 1999 as the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. AHRQ has been first and foremost a research agency yet focuses its activities to go beyond conducting, supporting, and disseminating research. We clearly now see an important role for AHRQ in helping the health care system in the United States translate research into improved health care practice and policy. Research is not an end in itself, but rather, a vehicle to improve the quality and safety of health care services.
