First, I wish to thank the senior leaders of the AAVMC for expressing their confidence by granting me the opportunity to guide the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education (JVME) to its next level of excellence. Over the past 35 years, following each appointment of my seven predecessors, the Journal has advanced incrementally in technical quality, volume, and quality of content, leading to its recognition today as the primary outlet for innovative ideas in veterinary education. This progress can be attributed to the vigor and fresh vision of each new editor, strongly influenced by opportunities to advance the Journal that matched their receptive spirit. I believe that some of the prime opportunities for advancement of veterinary education during this period came from greater faculty interest in educational theories and practice and from the emerging prominence of faculty with a primary interest in and commitment to advancing veterinary education. These trendsetters had the strength of conviction to challenge veterinary educational dogma and tradition, as well as a willingness to explore uncharted waters, which ultimately led to landmark changes in our professional education systems.
