This review highlights some of the work which appeared in thenliterature in 1999, featuring the use of whole cells and isolatednenzymes in synthetic organic chemistry. Fifteen journals 1 werenchosen to represent a good cross-section of the activity in thisnarea.nAs in the preceding reviews of this type,2 research workninvolving biosynthesis, metabolism (including microbialnmodels) and enzyme/antibody-based sensors is excluded.nIt is noteworthy that a biocatalysis database (using Synopsisnsoftware) is now available as a permanent part of the ChemicalnDatabase. The service is operated by the Central Laboratory ofnthe Research Councils at Daresbury, UK.
