'TRADITIONAL' TECHNIQUE AND LOCAL KNOWLEDGE ON HIDMO HOUSE CONSTRUCTION IN TIGRAY, ETHIOPIA

摘要

This paper aims to clarify traditional techniques and local knowledge on hid wo construction; a type of traditional house in Tigray, Ethiopia, by illuminating building construction processes consisting of stone quarry, shaping each piece, foundation work, wall masonry, ceiling and roofing construction, and plastering. Specific focus is on the tools and applied materials as well as relevant devisal. The results show that various existing tools were introduced from abroad and preceding building techniques and knowledge were more closely related with agriculture.
