Located in Portsdown Technology Park in southern England, from where it overlooks Portsmouth Naval Base and the Solent beyond, the Maritime Integration and Support Centre (MISC) was opened by BAE Systems in 2004 to support the integration and test of the combat system then in development for the Royal Navy's (RN's) Type 45 destroyer. That heritage is evidenced in the appearance of the two-storey facility, which is surmounted by replicas of the Type 45s foremast (hosting the Type 1045 multifunction radar inside a spherical radome) and aft mast (atop of which is the antenna of the Type 1046 long Range Radar). The two mast structures are, in terms of both height and separation, dimensionally identical to that of the actual Type 45 design, earning the MISC the local nickname of 'the ship on the hill'.
