US Navy's LCS programme picks up steam

The US Navy's Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) programme is ramping up, with both team leaders Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics announcing milestones in their respective Flight O programmes during October. Foremost among these is the announcement that the General Dynamics' Bath Iron Works-led team has secured a USD223 million contract for the design and construction of LCS 2, the first of its two 127 m trimaran hull vessels. Designed and built by subcontractor Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama, this contract constitutes the Australian-owned company's largest ever US order.
