Since May 2019 Gulf region security and stability has been challenged by an ongoing stand-off between Iran and other members of the international community, with a particular focus on risks to the free movement of commercial shipping in and around the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz. Responding to a series of incidents in May and June - including attacks on ships both at anchor and at sea - the United States established the 'Sentinel' maritime security operation within the US Navy (USN)-led Bahrain-based International Maritime Security Construct (IMSC).
