Death of a Viking

Established in 1994 by Denmark, Norway and Sweden, the pan-Nordic Project Viking submarine programme was originally envisaged as a 12-boat programme, with each partner slated to take four boats. It aimed to develop a 'commonalised' and affordable new-generation submarine design to meet the submarine replacement requirements of the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish navies. A tri-nation prime contractor-designate, known as the Viking Submarine Corporation (VSC) was established by Kockums, Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace and the Odense Steel Shipyard (part of the AP Møller Group).
