During the Cold War the threat posed by Soviet nuclear-powered submarines (SSNs) led to huge investment by the UK Royal Navy (RN) in anti-submarine warfare (ASW) doctrine, platforms and training, and the creation of a co-ordinated all-arms ASW capability with advanced technologies that the UK and other maritime powers are unlikely to ever match again.rnOver the past decade, however, the UK government's focus on land campaigns has led to disinvestment in ASW: a move that has reduced competency in this area and increased risk at a time when submarine capabilities are evolving.
