Affordability, relevance and ex-portability have led the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) to re-orientate its strategy for the Royal Navy's (RN's) Type 26 frigate programme in the wake of the Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR). The Type 26 programme - currently in its assessment phase - was confirmed by the SDSR, which explicitly stated an intention to bring the new class into service "as soon as possible after 2020". However, the programme will now embrace the Cl as well as C2 capability requirements previously set out under the MoD's surface combatant roadmap, so delivering a single Global Combat Ship (GCS) design.
