BAMS UAV gears up for first flight

The first of the US Navy's high-altitude Broad Area Maritime Surveillance (BAMS) unmanned aerial vehicles is set to conduct its maiden flight in the third quarter of this year, a senior official at Naval Air Systems Command said on 17 April. The Northrop Grumman-built aircraft will fly from the production facility in Palmdale, California, having been unveiled to the customer on 14 June, according to Captain Jim Hoke, who heads the Persistent Maritime Unmanned Aircraft Systems Program Office (PMA-262).
