Commissioned just as the Cold War had thawed, the Royal Netherlands Navy's (RNLN's) four Walrus-class diesel-electric submarines - HNLMS Walrus, HNLMS Zeeleeuw, HNLMS Dolfijn, and HNLMS Bruinvis - were introduced to service between 1990 and 1994. Built by RDM Submarines B.V. in Rotterdam from a design developed in partnership with naval design house Nevesbu, the boats embodied then state-of-the-art design and technology with regard to signatures; manoeuvring; platform automation; and sensor, weapon, and command system integration.
