US assets join 'Kakadu' exercise for first time

The US Navy (USN) deployed the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Hopper (DDG 70) and a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft to the international naval exercise 'Kakadu' hosted by Australia. The deployments reflected the service's aim of enhancing interoperability with navies in the wider Asia-Pacific region and is the first time that the USN has participated in the biennial naval drills, the navy said in a 12 September statement. Hopper had sailed from Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in late August.
