The problems encountered by the USN with introduction to service of LCS have attracted repeated criticism from Congress, the media and inside the Pentagon. The implementation of recommendations stemming from the LCS review is intended to stabilise the introduction to service programme, but will at the same time discard some of the precepts - such as rapid role change through mission module interchange - that underpinned the original rationale for the class. While a total force level of 40 LCS/ FF ships has been approved for the programme, the Navy Force Structure Assessment still projects the need for 52 small surface combatants.
