Russia gives the go-ahead for new heavy ICBM

Russia will develop a new liquid-propel-lant intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) intended to penetrate the US missile-defence system, Lieutenant General Sergei Kara-kayev, head of Russia's Strategic Missile Forces (SMF) announced on 16 December. Intended to replace the current R-36M2 Voyevoda (SS-18 'Satan') this will be a silo-launched heavy missile with "enhanced capability to breach a hypothetical US missile defence system," he told the RIA Novosti news agency.
