MAN confirmed development of the HX tactical range of trucks at Defence Vehicles Dynamics (DVD) 2003 and then first publicly displayed an example at DSEI 2003. As part of MAN's X range of tactical trucks, the HX was developed to progressively replace the earlier FX and LX ranges, and would also eventually replace the SX range. MAN's FX medium and heavy range of tactical trucks were available from about 1990 until they were replaced by HX range models from about 200S, while the lighter duty, high-mobility LX range that was available from about 1988 was replaced from about 2004. There was also an MX range but this was not produced in a large quantity.
