Greece Fires First Essm From Hydra-class Frigate

The Hellenic Navy's Hydra-class frigate HS Salamis has successfully launched an Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) against a drone target, destroying it at a range of 5 n miles, writes Huw Williams. A Thales spokesman told Jane's that only one missile was fired during the test; he was unable to disclose either the flight characteristics of the drone or whether it deployed any countermeasures. This test marked the first successful launch of an ESSM from a Hydra-class frigate, four of which are due to be upgraded to have an ESSM-capable Separate Target Illumination Radar (STIR) fire-control system.
