Royal Australian Navy Offers Self-contained Capabilities For Rescue Operations

The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) has accumulated a great deal of recent experience operating in disaster-hit zones, following its efforts after the Asian tsunami and in other austere and damaged port settings around the world. In situations where airports have been put out of action and harbours blocked, the RAN has developed a process of dispatching Deployable Geospatial Support Teams (DGST), which are tasked with providing a clear passage for relief vessels, both military and civil. Maintained on 24-hour alert, the four-strong teams are based at the Australian Hydro-graphic Office, which in turn forms part of the RAN's Hydrographic, Meteorological and Oceanographic Force Element Group (HMFEG).
