Italy's House of Representatives defence committee has formally approved the procurement of two additional Type 212A diesel-electric submarines equipped with air-independent propulsion (AIP) for the Italian Navy, writes Luca Peruzzi. The move exercises an option enshrined in the original Type 212A submarine acquisition memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by Italy and Germany in April 1996. That deal saw Italy initially order two boats (Salvatore Todaro and Scire, commissioned in June 2005 and May 2006 respectively) with the provision for a further two.
