Russia's Rosoboronexport is now offering a modular upgrade kit for the ZU-23-2 light anti-aircraft gun (LAAG), with the aim of improving its operational capabilities, especially against high-speed targets. The ZU-23/ZOM1 upgrade package includes enhancements to the ZU-23-2's mount, a tripod-mounted dayight optical tracker, a trailer-mounted surface-to-air missile (SAM) system and a power supply. In a typical target engagement, the system's 9M333 SAMs are used to engage targets at longer ranges while the twin 23 mm guns are employed against close-in targets; the latter also have a secondary ground-to-ground capability. The improved mount features powered elevation and traverse. It is fitted with a new sighting system with the option of a pod of two fire-and-forget SAMs positioned on the upper portion; these are co-aligned with the guns. Further optional equipment includes an automatic target tracker and a digital computer. The tripod-mounted tracker is used to detect targets that are then handed over to the appropriate weapon system for engagement.
