Lockheed Martin wins contract to upgrade US Air Force A-10C Thunderbolt II fleet

The US Air Force (USAF) has contracted Lockheed Martin to upgrade the integration software that controls the communications and situational awareness capabilities of its Fairchild-Republic A-10C Thunderbolt II close air support aircraft.rnThe upgrade will provide an improved human/machine interface (HMD and enhanced weapons delivery capability. In addition, the software provides interfaces for the helmet-mounted cueing system, designed to increase situational awareness through improved visual cues for the pilot, and a Lightweight Airborne Recovery System (LARS), which integrates a search-and-rescue capability onto the aircraft.rnIn essence, LARS locates survivors equipped with the AN/PRC-112 survival radio. It can also steer to any source of continuous-wave UHF signals, such as the AN/PRC-90 survival radio.
