Rheinmetall Waffe Munition (RWM) is completing the development phase of a new air-burst hand grenade for Sweden that will supersede current grenades. The Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) awarded a contract to RWM in February for the development, qualification and serial production of the grenade. Qualification is scheduled for March 2011 with first deliveries due by the end of that year. The contract includes 25,000 live grenades and 75,000 training grenades. Blast grenades are insufficient in open ground and fragmentation grenades are limited by an excessive safety radius and the fact that most fragments are dispersed into soil or air, which diminishes their terminal effect.
