Chemical world: CBRN defence aims for portability and multipurpose systems

The nature of the chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threat has changed substantially over the past two decades. The Cold War's constant threat of instant annihilation, mutual assured destruction or the horror of a post-nuclear global war clean-up has receded, at least in Europe and North America, taking with it the conventional posture that necessitated amassing millions of troops to counter a large-scale attack from another nation state. Even the sarin gas incident on the Tokyo subway that raised the spectre of a civil CBRN threat more than 15 years ago was not followed bv further attacks.
