Soldier systems buffeted by the winds of war

Efforts to treat the individual soldier as a 'system', harmonising all the lines of development potentially affecting the dismounted infantryman's performance (lethality, survivability, sustainability, mobility and C4I), started in earnest within NATO in the mid 1990s. Some of the resulting soldier-system hardware developments began to see service in small numbers a decade or so later but, in the case of the great majority, large-scale employment remains an aspiration.
