MUOS 4 launch completes US Navy satcom constellation

The US Navy's (USN's) fourth Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) was launched on 2 September from Cape Canaveral, Florida. MUOS provides cellular phone-like communications for forces worldwide and once MUOS 4 settles into its geosynchronous orbit (approximately 22,000 miles above the earth), it will provide satellite communications (satcom) coverage extending from the North to South poles. A fifth satellite, an on-orbit spare, will be launched in early 2016, but the constellation is essentially complete with four systems.
