Over the rainbow: Cai Hong UAV family takes to the world stage

In early 1999, a senior official of the Beijing Aerodynamics Research Institute - now known as the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics (CAAA) and a key constituent of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) - became aware of a requirement from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that could carry airborne telemetry equipment to support the corps' missile test evaluation efforts.
