US government responds as ransomware attacks lead to increasing supply chain and infrastructure disruption

The White House on 1 June stated that a ransomware attack on the world's largest meat supplier was likely conducted by a group operating from Russia. The attack on JBS led to the suspension of operations at plants in Australia, Canada, and the United States, in the latest example of ransomware leading to disruptions of supply chains and critical infrastructure.This followed a high-profile ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline Company, claimed by the DarkSide ransomware group, that led to the shutdown of the company's pipeline on 7 May. DarkSide is widely reported to be based in Eastern Europe and has issued statements in Russian.The disruption this caused led US President Joseph Biden to declare a state of emergency, relaxing some regulations on fuel transport. The US Transportation Security Administration then issued a directive on cyber security for pipeline companies on 27 May, introducing mandatory reporting requirements and reviews of security practices.
