US military chiefs call for wider intelligence declassification

A 26 April report in Politico claimed that nine four-star US military chiefs-constituting all but two of the four-star combatant commanders-had sent an unclassified memo to then acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire in January 2020 seeking help in "the information war against Russia and China".This had led United States Intelligence Community (USIC) chiefs to study how the agencies might declassify and release more intelligence.The chiefs stated in the memo, "Unfortunately, we continue to miss opportunities to clarify truth, counter distortions, puncture false narratives, and influence events in time to make a difference." Politico judged that the so-called '36-star memo' had "made waves inside the Pentagon, the Intelligence Community, and on Capitol Hill", leading to the convening of several working groups.
