Panamax military exercises start in Panama Canal

The operation panamax military exercises, to test the response of Panamanian security forces to an attack on the Panama Canal, ran from 6-17 August. The military exercises are usually undertaken annually with the participation of regional partners and the United States featuring mock attacks on the structure of the Panama Canal. The aim of the US-sponsored military exercises is to test a variety of responses to protect and guarantee the safe passage of commercial traffic through the 80 km canal. Representatives of Belize, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, France, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and the US participated in land, sea, air and cyber environments. The US Naval Forces Southern Command and US Fourth Fleet said: "More than 600 military personnel have travelled to Mayport for the exercise including 170 guests from partner nations."
